RSPB's Big Garden Bird Watch 2018

Interesting how the weather, or perhaps I should say, temperature, affects the numbers of birds visiting our gardens. I found, and others agreed, that we saw many more during the periods of cold and this year's bird count coincided with several days of mild wet.

And a rural location makes a huge difference. For myself, an hour's quiet time looking, moving on, hiding behind shrubs and really looking at the hedges revealed a colony of House Sparrows in the ivy above the compost heap and a loud call revealed a Treecreeper, un-noticed although only a couple of metres away. But no Long-tailed Tits despite counting 5 the day before. One appeared late afternoon and of course, the first bird I saw this morning was a L-T T! But as one of you said, 'that's life' or should we say 'wildlife'!

And of course there were the ones which flew over or hung around in neighbour's trees like Starlings, Redwing and a Buzzard and was that a female Firecrest in the side garden? Interesting to see the difference in Lezant between the front and back of the house.

Here are the results sent in from M(Middlewood), L(Launceston), D(Downgate), Lz(Lezant, front & back). Thank you to all concerned. Thirty-one species between us.
